SUGGESTIONS WHEN STORING
- Storing a couch…stand it up on end to use less space. Cushions can
then be placed on top. If it is a sleeper sofa, you may need to remove
the mattress or secure it with a rope so it does not open.
- Pack drawers and put them in the dresser once it is moved.
- Can you remove the legs of any tables you are storing?
- Are you storing major appliances, fill all the empty spaces with
blankets, towels, small boxes and clothes. Be sure the refrigerator or
freezer is thoroughly dry and leave the doors open for ventilation.
- Plan your storage space, place those items that you need to get to
often in the front and breakables like glasses and china should be on
top.
- Try to keep your boxes uniform in size, to make stacking easy.
- Label all boxes for easy identification.
- Leave a small space between stacks for ventilation.
- Trash cans make a great place to store shovels, hoes, rakes and
hoses.
- Be sure to lean mattresses so they are straight. Letting it sag or
bend may ruin the condition of it.
- Pack books flat to protect their spines.
- No food of any kind. Don’t forget about the rice in a microwave
heating pad, bird food and dry pet food. All will attract rodents.
- Use plain white newsprint for dishes and china. Regular newspaper
will stain your dishes.
- Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror boxes.
- Insurance on your items is your responsibility. Sometimes, homeowner's or renter's insurance will cover your personal belongings so check with your agent. If not, Deans and Homer offer insurance for tenants at www.insureyourstuff.com
